uCity Square has welcomed some new neighbors to the community: bees!

Through a new partnership with Alvéole, uCity Square is supporting urban biodiversity while creating opportunities for our community to get a closer look at the important role bees and other pollinators play in our environment.

A friendly honey bee hive has been installed on the rooftop of 3401 Market Street, where Alvéole’s beekeeping team (and lead beekeeper, Tanner) will care for the colony throughout the season. At One uCity Square, BeeHomes have also been installed in the pollinator gardens to provide nesting habitat for local wild bee species, including solitary bees such as mason and leafcutter bees. Take a peek the next time you pass by along Cuthbert Street between 37th and 38th!

The partnership extends beyond creating new habitats for pollinators. Throughout the year, the uCity Square community will have opportunities to learn about the bees, follow activity at the hive, and participate in educational programs and events.

To kick things off, join us on October 8 at 12:00 PM for Explore the World of Wild Bees, a free Lunch & Learn with Alvéole that takes a closer look at wild pollinators, their role in our food system and how we can help support them in urban environments.

The uCity Square community can also help welcome our new hive by participating in our Name the Queen contest. Submit your best name for the queen bee and stay tuned to see which one is selected.

You can follow along with the hive, see updates from our beekeeper, learn more about the bees, register for upcoming events, name the Queen, and more through the personalized uCity Square MyHive page.

Stay tuned for more updates as we follow our pollinators throughout the four seasons.
