Recap: uCity Square artwork ‘Ascendance’ dedication event
On November 18, 2024, uCity Square officially added an extraordinary, new, permanent artwork to its collection of public art with the dedication of Ascendance, created in partnership with Studio John Cooke and Mural Arts Philadelphia.
This striking canopy structure, located at The Square at uCity (37th & Cuthbert), was designed by artists Nina Cooke John, Yolanda Wisher, and Kendrah Butler-Waters. Ascendance was inspired by the diverse communities and cultures of West Philadelphia, past and present, and is designed to be a welcoming, functioning and iconic gathering point.
The organic form of the vertical fins is supported by a galvanized steel core sandwiched by multiple layers of bent wood. The structure of the three separate canopies above is also made of galvanized steel layered with woven rPET (recycled PET plastic) rope creating dappled shading below. The fins are grouped in different sizes and bend in different directions to encourage movement in and through and gathering of different sizes beneath the canopy. Natural materials and traditional textures contrast the high technology of the steel to create an iconic piece.
The artwork also includes an original soundtrack, curated by former Philadelphia poet laureate Yolanda Wisher and composed by Kendrah Butler-Waters, Philadelphia-based musician. The soundtrack was created from oral histories and field recordings collected during several block parties held in the neighborhood in 2023 as part of the project’s development, and which will play each day at 12:00 p.m. at the site. At the base of the artwork are tiles that were handmade by community members and produced locally by The Clay Studio, reflecting their memories of the neighborhood. This immersive installation is designed to remember and honor the rich cultural heritage of West Philadelphia while embracing today’s dynamic mix of science, technology, and education.
The dedication ceremony was a lively community gathering that brought in over 100 attendees. The event kicked off with a procession and performance by the West Powelton Drum Squad and Steppers, followed by a poetry reading by Yolanda Wisher, an original dance performance by Putty Dance Project, the premiere of the full soundtrack, and remarks by Councilmember Jamie Gauthier, the project team, artist team, and community. Attendees screen printed an original design of Ascendance onto uCity Square tote bags and posters to take home.
Ascendance is a dynamic space for reflection, joy, and connection, encapsulating the essence of uCity Square as a hub for art, culture, and community engagement. We hope this space becomes a community gathering place for planned events and impromptu get-togethers for many years to come!
