On Thursday, April 24, 2025, uCity Square hosted its 2nd annual Take Your Kids to Work Day, bringing together families, educators, and innovators for a day of interactive STEM exploration and workplace discovery. Building on the success of the 2024 inaugural event, this year’s programming offered an expanded lineup of hands-on activities designed to spark curiosity and creativity in young minds.

The day began with check-in at Take Your Kids to Work Day HQ at 3675 Market Street, where over 150 registered children received their own personalized schedules for the day. Sessions included:

  • CIC’s Marvelous Marble Magic: Kids donned lab coats and protective eyewear in the lab before swirling together shaving cream and food coloring to transfer to paper. The result: beautiful and marvelous marbled paper to take home!
  • CodedBy’s Startup Spark: An immersive experience for students, diving into various tech professions and getting a firsthand look at the tech startup environment.
  • Drexel Westphal College of Media Arts & Design’s Marshmallow Architecture Challenge: Teams of two designed and built structures using marshmallows, focusing on stability, function, and creativity, followed by presentations explaining their design choices. We saw skyscrapers, houses, and even a wrestling arena!
  • Exponent’s Clip & Conduct: Kids participated in this hands-on engineering project, assembling working motors from household items and learning about basic engineering principles.
  • FirstHand’s GuarGum Slime Lab Challenge: Kids crafted their own guar gum slime, comparing it to previous creations to understand the science behind the goo. Participants got to tint their slime, add mix-ins, and take their slime home!
  • Build a Cell & Create a Snake: A fusion of science and art, where kids used petri dishes, beads, pipe cleaners, construction paper, and other materials to craft models of cells and imaginative snakes.

After the workshops, families enjoyed lunch from local food trucks at The Lawn, followed by opportunities for children to shadow their parents at work and explore the University of Pennsylvania, including free visits to the Penn Museum and Penn Relays.

We thank all the vendors and organizations that led sessions and made the day memorable: CIC, CodedBy, Drexel Westphal College of Media Arts & Design, Exponent, FirstHand, Wexford Science + Technology, and the University of Pennsylvania. Your dedication to inspiring the next generation is truly appreciated!
