Back in April, the creative placemaking collaboration initiative LoLa 38 had West Philly community members choose 10 artists from their community who would be involved in periodic art installations on the windows of a United Bankbuilding or on the construction fence surrounding the former University City High School.
The first several of these artists’ projects have already taken place, and now for August, the construction fence around the former high school is featuring a mural that takes a look at the “history of greening” in West Philadelphia.
This Wednesday, the official debut of the mural, created by artist Gabrielle Patterson, is coinciding with Pennsylvania Horticultural Society’s (PHS) Pop-Up Garden at University City Square, which is also celebrating the area’s history of gardening. PHS’ VP and chief of programs Julianne Schrader Ortega will be speaking.
LoLa 38 is also hosting a writing workshop with Writer’s Room at the Pop-Up Garden, where attendees will be able to write their own West Philly story. Select pieces will be published in an anthology focused on University City this fall.
